What to Expect Before a Vein Procedure

Before undergoing a vein procedure like EVLA or sclerotherapy injections, the patient has a thorough history and physical examination.  If varicose veins or spider veins are detected on the exam, further investigation is warranted with a non-invasive imaging scan called a duplex ultrasound study.  Blood tests may or may not be ordered as well.  Your physician will consider all this information before recommending which vein treatments you should undergo.

If you are going to have EVLA or foam sclerotherapy, make sure you eat a good breakfast, drink lots of fluids and stay warm before you arrive.  If you are dehydrated, it is more difficult to visualize your veins with ultrasound and it is more likely that you will experience dizziness during your treatment.
