Dermatitis, or inflammation of the skin, is caused by anything that injures the skin including burns to chemicals or allergies. Usually dermatitis refers to chemical injury that produces redness, burning or itching, and possibly blistering of the skin. Common dermatitis causes are poison ivy, fiberglass, detergents, and acids. The treatment is to avoid the causative substance and allow the skin to heal using gentle cleansers, moisturizers and possibly cortisone creams. A consultation with a dermatologist can speed the diagnosis and help to identify the offending substance, as well as provide the appropriate treatment.
